What to expect at your Pregnancy Massage:

Which areas of the body will be massage?

Your consultation commences with a brief discussion about your general health and pregnancy to date.  Your massage therapist will ask you about any symptoms, aches or pain you are experiencing. Where are the worst areas of discomfort in your body?  This information then allows your therapist to design a massage sequence tailored specifically to you.  You can choose the areas of your body to be massaged.  Some women will choose one or two painful areas of the body to be the focus of their Pregnancy Massage.  Others will choose massage covering many areas of the body.  The choice is yours.  If you are unsure your massage therapist can advise you on the best way to address your specific health concerns.

What position will I be in for the massage?

At Hatch Therapies we understand every pregnancy is different and all women have different needs during their pregnancies.  Therefore not only do we design each massage sequence to suit each individual but also where or how the massage is conducted.  We will ask you about your preferred position to be massage in.  Depending on what stage you are at in your pregnancy you may choose to

  • lay face down on the massage table pregnancy support
  • lay on your side
  • sit in a chair
  • change positions

Some pregnant women find it hard to stay in the one position, it’s ok to change positions too.  Your massage consultation is a relaxed environment it’s ok to move.  You can even walk around if you need to.

Pregnancy Massage with Acupuncture

At Hatch Therapies our unique treatments often combine massage and acupuncture.  Acupuncture is commonly used throughout pregnancy and can be combined with Pregnancy Massage.  Often the acupuncture points will be used on the most painful areas of the body after they are massaged.  This can be a great way to concentrate extra attention where it’s needed most.  Acupuncture may also be added to Pregnancy Massage with a goal to assist the mind to relax.  Acupuncture is commonly used for labour preparation too.

Pregnancy Massage for labour preparation

In the weeks leading up to your due date or from your due date and beyond Pregnancy Massage may be used with a goal to prepare for and encourage labour.  Specific areas of the body are massaged which according to Traditional Chinese Medicine have a relationship with promoting labour.  An important aspect of this treatment is also addressing individual aches, pain and promoting relaxation.
